These four lads out of Birmingham, Alabama
seem to have a flare for emotive rock and roll. They are
kind of reminiscent of early Radiohead or Coldplay, before
the blips and beeps of electronica overtook their sound.
Vocalist Preston Lovinggood sings songs that are both youthful
and somewhat damaged. His demons come through in his lyrics
and the band explodes with raw beauty. They may be young,
but they are capable of blowing your mind with their distinct
brand of rock and roll. The first single, "Ten Dead Dogs,"
is an awesome way to lead the audience in to this album.
It's moody in lyric and performance. Many of the songs offer
up subjects that are obviously autobiographical to the band,
like "House of Regret" and "Aretha's Gold." Both of these
songs sound like tales that have been lived. On the song
"either/or" we find Wild Sweet Orange flexing their muscles
a bit, showing us just how good old country boys get down.
The album is full of buzzing guitars and angry vocals.
With the vulnerability of their youth and their recklessness
they are able to capture something honest and real. This
is a very exciting debut. It is fully realized and yet leaves
so much room for the future of their sound.
