Sara Borges and the Broken Singles ~ The Stars are Out Tonight

Line

Written by Joe Koch

The highly anticipated follow up release to their debut on Sugar Hill Records falls short when comparing the two. But, that’s not to say that this is not a great record. This album is packed with some hidden gems; after a couple listens they become more prominent.

The first single, “Do it for Free,” automatically becomes the standout track. It’s a great Joan Jett sounding rocker that is about all of the creepy men that come to their shows. The comparison to Joan Jett is a compliment says Sarah, “but it’s not like we sat around listening to her albums and then said lets write a song that sounds like that. I just think it’s easier to compare or lump female singers together being that there aren’t that many, especially rockers. “

The album is comprised of 10 songs — five originals and five covers. On this record they wanted to break away from being labeled country music and they did just that. Previously, the pedal steel guitar was a regular instrument on their recordings. With the addition of new guitarist Lyle Brewer, he attempted to learn the instrument but decided to just learn the parts on regular guitar, leaving them with more of a rock sound. It’s exactly the direction they wanted to go.

The band, which is known for its upbeat, high-energy live shows, was able to capture that feel on songs like “I’ll show you How,” written by bassist Binky, and “Yesterday’s Love,” a cover by the UK band Any Trouble, and another cover “It Comes to Me Naturally,” by NRBQ. The one thing the band didn’t lose was the ability to make you want to dance.

Sarah sings with originality. She’s not trying to sound like who is on the radio. Her genuineness is a major selling point of her music and she conveys it on every song. After a couple of listens you’ll find yourself saying, “What was I thinking? This album is great!”
