Mumford & Sons ~ Sigh No More

Line

Words by Brent Conley

Hailing from London, this four-piece band is taking the world by storm. They are already seeing success in Australia, Eastern Europe and the United Kingdom. Hopefully, the United States will be next to fully embrace this folk band from across the pond.

However, to just say that Mumford & Sons is a folk band doesn’t really describe their sound. As I see it, they are like the Sex Pistols of folk. They are brash and full of passion. There are moments on Sigh No More where you feel yourself being swept up and engulfed by the emotion of the lyrics and the taut aggression of the music.

So far, their big hit has been “Little Lion Man.” Obviously this is a very raw and real song for Marcus Mumford, lead vocalist and songwriter. His voice quivers with anger as he shouts through his whispers to bring to life this amazing song. Even the way he beats on the muted guitar strings adds to the overall mood.

The honesty of the music combines with the poetic prose to create rare music of integrity and strength. Two great examples of what these four guys are capable of are “White Blank Page” and “Dust Bowl Dance.” The former speaks to the hopeless feeling of unrequited love and the silent suffering which exists in that kind of relationship. “Dust Bowl Dance” is about the power and glory of family as a son seeks revenge on his father’s final judge.

If you love well-crafted music, then you will love Mumford & Sons. They play it the way it was always meant to be played. Sigh No More is on my short list for album of the year and deserves to be on many more.

I recommend that you get a copy of this album right now. Don’t be the last one to know about Mumford & Sons. Instead be one of the first and be sure to tell all of your friends about them. They will love you for it.

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
