Martha's Trouble ~ 2008 EP

Line

Written by Joe Koch

After 14 years we have come full circle with the ever-changing acoustic duo of Jen and Rob Slocumb. They have eight recording projects under their belt and their latest is no disappointment. Each album has its own identity. Through their discography you can find them experimenting with a variety of percussion instruments as they explore the sounds of folk, pop-rock and Americana. The six song EP represents their current state of raising a family and still living the dream. This is the first time since their inaugural album that they have a full band performing the recording. Adding to the permanent line-up is Jacob Blount (guitars,) Paul Dow (bass) and David Ytterberg (drums.) Once again Martha's Trouble turned to Chris Rosser for his skills at producing. Chris has produced almost all of their previous recordings.

The EP brings a fresh take on the song "100 Miles to Charleston" taken from their 2002 release Sleeping Dogs, which won them "Best Americana Album" at the Just Plain Folks Awards in 2004. Put a driving beat behind it with guest musician Lloyd Maines on an impressive pedal steel and you have the 2008 version.

The long-awaited "Red Door" has made it to the studio, you can see a great acoustic performance of this song on YouTube, recorded at "Radio Live" in Pensacola, FL. This song shows how the input from other musicians can give it a new life.

Jen communicates her stories with lyrics that are direct and to the point. Her conviction captivates the listener’s attention, allowing them to become one with the song. Sometimes you feel like you’re riding beside them in their van as they travel from one city to the next. If you are new to the sounds of Martha's Trouble? I highly recommend that you start from the beginning and work your way through their 14 years of recordings, 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars.
