Eilen’s newest album is her most accomplished
one yet. On her third release, that old-time country feel
has gotten a little rowdy, with a move toward garage rock
and classic R&B. Her voice is strong and distinct and her
songwriting is impeccable. The music emotes raw sentiment
as she delivers plaintive vocals. It’s that very relationship,
each complementing the other, which draws you in.
Hidden among Eilen’s nine original songs
are three covers: one from Van Morrison (“I’m Gonna Dress
in Black”), a British rock-and-roll standard “Shakin’All
Over,” and one from Loretta Lynn (“Darkest Day”). But its
Eilen’s songs that give this album its true character. She
is an authentic person who makes authentic music. She doesn’t
feel the need to hide her influences. She instead celebrates
them and builds upon them to create an album full of gems.
The opener “Rain Roll In” has a nice
Vietnam era guitar riff and a constant drum beat that carries
her voice along like a wave, gentle but full of strength.
“Sweet Rose” is a cool dark song propelled by the tender
seductive slap of an upright bass and a sexy slide guitar.
You can’t help but feel this one. Other standout songs are
“Sea Of Tears,” “Codeine Arms” and “I’m Gonna Dress in Black”.
The latter of which is my favorite on the album because
her vocals are so robust and convincing.
This album has a live feel to it. It
comes out strong and finishes stronger. Her fans will love
it and appreciate the risk she took in writing this album.
Anyone who hasn’t heard of her until now shouldn’t hesitate
to embrace this album. She is one of the great ones.
