Colt Ford embodies the curious experience
of growing up in the new south. Traditionally country but
now with hip-hop and R&B influences finding their way onto
the farms. Colt Ford is still more hillbilly then Kid Rock
or Uncle Kracker so the hip-hop crowd might not be as receptive
as country radio. With a slow southern Georgia drawl he
delivers songs that could be heard blaring from the trucks
at the good ole mud bog.
Collaborating with respected country
artist sure helps to legitimize his music. Guest like Jamey
Johnson and John Michael Montgomery help to keep the trailer
court references from sounding a bit redundant. However
I love the fact that there is a country ballad about meeting
at the waffle house to talk Colt out of killing his cheating
wife who slept with the sheriff. Just listing to a song
like this will make you feel a little bit hillbilly. On
the song “Never Thought” about how the cowboy life could
be a lonely one. Colt shows he does have some depth and
can write a solid country pop song. “No Trash in My Trailer”
is a hillbilly pride anthem that is a send up of all things
that outsiders would consider trashy but to Colt and his
friends they are the things that make them who they are.
Overall this is a good album. Sometimes
the mash up of musical styles works and sometimes it falls
short. But it is an entertaining album and I have listened
to it so much that I find myself speaking with my own southern
drawl. So ya all would really be doin’ yourselves a favor
if you cracked open a cold one and put on this here record
for your enjoyment.
