Wow! This is a great album. Their songwriting has really
matured. Lyrically and musically it is recognizable yet
still fresh. In my humble opinion, 3 Doors Down has always
been one of the better bands over the last five or six years.
I would say what they have created is a really nice career
for themselves. By staying true to the music they want to
create without completely abandoning a desire for mass appeal,
they have found the key to longevity. As any one-hit wonder
could tell, this is quite an achievement. What I’ve always
liked about them is the emotion. Every song has a purpose,
and when they are in the moment, it really comes though.
With this, their fourth album, they give you songs about
love, songs about politics and songs full of angst. One
of the best songs is one of the best they've ever written.
“Train” has a gritty bouncy guitar riff that is awesome.
I was singing along and pumping my fist within seconds:
“Put me on the train mama.” “Train” is followed on the album
by another one of their best, “Citizen/Solider.” It sounds
more like something the band Live would write. They redefine
their sound with this song. It's powerful and meaningful
and subtle and grand all at once. On the last track, “She
Don’t Want the World,” they channel Phil Collins and create
something along the lines of “In the Air Tonight.” It’s
full of tension and tears. It’s a great song about loneliness
and despair.
3 Doors Down rock hard and deserve a lot of credit for how
good they are. With this album they have given us a glimpse
of what the future holds for them. I would say that this
is the bridge from who they were to who they are becoming.
On that journey they have given us a nearly perfect album.
